Communications Department

Building Bridges of Hope

We work toward this goal by reaching out to diverse church audiences — both internally and externally — through many avenues of communication. Creating informative and intuitive web sites, updating social media sites, and writing news stories and press releases are some of the ways we share our message. Through our work, we foster a clearer image of the church, its mission, activities and witness, so that many will become followers of Christ and members of His church.

Leadership

Introduction

This is a ministry that has amazing potential for sharing the message of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The roles of the Department of Communication includes sharing news with church members and ensuring your church is properly represented to the community.

The department communicates with these three primary groups of people: members of the church, the conference communication department, and most importantly, the community.

Church Members

Church members need to know what’s happening at our church. This group includes those who attend every week, occasionally, rarely, shut-ins, and inactive members.

Conference Communication Department

As part of a global network of Adventist communicators, the department helps the Seventh-day Adventist Church stay connected. This is achieved by sending articles and photos to the conference communication director. This is one way of are sharing news with members around the world and recording the church’s history.

Community

This group includes people whose experience with the Adventist Church ranges from positive to negative, their knowledge from extensive to non-existent. The department looks for ways to raise awareness of the Adventist Church and build bridges with people from the community. Events such as VBS, an evangelistic series, or a financial aid programs are some of the prime opportunities to get visitors inside your church’s doors.

Objective of the Communication Department

Objectives of the Communication Department are to use, and promote the use of, all modern communication techniques and media in the most effective manner for the swiftest promulgation of the everlasting gospel, through a sound program of public relations to create a favourable climate for acceptance of the message of salvation through Christ as taught by the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

To achieve these objectives, believing that with or without a knowledge of any organization, people tend to form opinions on the basis of what they may see or hear, the department has committed itself to a program of positive, accurate presentation to establish in the public mind the following characteristics of the church and its message:

  • A Christian church
  • An active church
  • A progressive church
  • A humanitarian church
  • A responsible church
  • A respectable church
  • A friendly church
  • A personally helpful church
  • A growing church
  • A global church

Such a program requires an awareness and sensitivity to the currents and undercurrents of the times and events, both internally and externally, as they relate to the organization. It requires recognition that the church is in the world, not set apart from the world, in order that it might beat a greater, more effective witness to god’s love.

The Department of Communication does not ask that it multiply programs for the local church to engage in.  Rather, it extends its hands to help the pastor, the local church, and the multiplied organizations of the denomination make more effective their presence in the world community, their witness to that community, and their thrust in the accomplishment of the gospel commission given by the Son of God while He walked with men in everlasting brotherhood.

Roles of Communications Department

Communication ministry calls for the support of every layperson, Church employee, and Church institution. The communication department promotes the use of a sound program of public relations and all contemporary communication techniques, sustainable technologies, and media in the promulgation of the gospel. The church should elect a communication secretary and, where needed, a communication committee.

“We must take every justifiable means of bringing the light before the people. Let the press be utilized, and let every advertising agency be employed that will call attention to the work.”—6T 36.

The communication personnel should have the ability to meet people and rightly represent the Church, sound judgment, good organization, effective writing skills, and a willingness to carry out assignments.

The personnel gathers and disseminates news to local media, cooperates with the conference communication director, and presents periodic reports to the business meeting. The conference communication department provides appropriate instruction and help to communication personnel in local churches.

The pastor, who is primarily responsible for the communication program of the church, will work closely in an advisory capacity with the communication secretary or committee.

Any department or organization may appoint an individual to provide the communication secretary or committee with information about newsworthy events.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic which saw churches closed, the Nyamira South Church in consultation with the Communication Department and the Board, established a Communication Committee that procured equipment for online Sabbath services.

The services which started in May 2020 have been going on each Sabbath and have attracted many viewers who use our social media platforms to receive the services.
